Calais
Calais is a town located in Northern France. The city has a population of about 125,584 according to results of 1999 census. Calais is directly opposite the Straight of Dover. The town location is the narrowest location of the English Channel that is only 34 km in width. It is also the nearest French Town to England. For numerous centuries, the city was a territorial possession. The city is divided into the older and new town. The older town (Calais-Nord or Calais Proper) is located on an artificial island delimited by harbors and canals. The current town is located in the southern and south east regions.
Economy
The economy of the city has remained stable mainly as a result of its proximity to England. The port has been the most reliable source of income in the town. There are a lot of ships and cargo moving from England to France among other regions.
Besides the port, the town also deals with paper manufacturing, lace making and chemicals. The tourism industry is also well developed as the city is one of the most frequent destinations of English visitors. The hospitality industry has a number of restaurants located in the traditional seaside towns. Shopping in the island makes a popular economic activity as well.
Settlement regions
Real estate is a fast developing industry in Calais. Several investors are venturing into the real estate industry. Both the Calais Proper and the New Calais are popular are popular settlement places. The cost of the houses is generally equal and high in the urban area.
High immigration in the city has led to farther demand of housing in the region. Limited housing has led to immigrants with no means of getting decent housing in the city to camp in the area called `The Jungle’. This is an area located in the dunes region.
The cost of houses has been increasing steadily in at Calais. Real estate investment in Calais has good returns with the fast increasing population and steady income from many of the people. The investment opportunities are open both to locals and international citizens.
Financial sources
Calais is an independent city with several sources of income with the port being the major source. There is minimal donor aid received in the city. The well established service and manufacturing industry has greatly increased development of the town.
Well developed infrastructure is attracting people to settle in the outskirts of the town hence increasing value of property in the outskirts of the city.
